KILIMANJARO CLIMBER UPDATE : THORPE X2 – MACHAME 7 (13-20 MAY 2012)

Jeanette and Paula have today climbed from 3850m at Shira Camp up to Lava Tower at 4600m to aid their acclimatisation. Once at Lava tower they rested and tucked into a lunch of sausage and egg muffins, fruit and hot chocolate and are now descending to Barranco camp at 3950m. Both are feeling a little tired from this mornings exertions but are looking forward to traversing the Barranco wall tomorrow. Paula does suffer from vertigo so at first sight was a little nervous but having seen the porters climbing with enormous bags on their heads she’s a lot more confident, and I quote ‘can’t wait to get started!’ Watch out for daily posts on their progress here and if you want to find out more about the weather that they’ll be experiencing on Kilimanjaro take a look at the latest forecast here or what they will be up to tomorrow then just click here.

Jeanette and Paula reached the Machame camp at 4pm yesterday and upon their arrival were greeted by a fully set up camp, hot popcorn and tea and coffee. Overnight the temperature dropped but they remained warm in their Mutha Hubba tent and managed a good 8 hours sleep. Today they had breakfast of porridge and toast and plenty more coffee and began their walk up to Shira Camp at 3850m. The weather has not been quite as kind today, there was rain this morning for a few hours but still everyone is in good spirits. They will spend tonight at Shira camp wrapped up in their tents. Jeanette and Paula started their Kilimanjaro challenge this morning at Machame Gate at an altitude of 1800m. The weather has been kind to them today with fantastic blue skies and lots of sunshine as they’ve trekked through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful montane forest to Machame Camp at 3000m where they will be spending the night. Everyone is in good spirits and tucking into a hearty meal. Amani Children’s Home – Kilimanjaro Fundraising

Amani Children’s Home in Moshi is committed to reducing the number of children living on the streets in Tanzania by providing a nurturing place for homeless children to heal, grow, and learn. In addition to providing long-term care, Amani aims to reunite children with their relatives when possible and to equip their families with the tools they need to be self-sustainable. As you would expect, this high level of care comes at a price. At Private Kilimanjaro we support Amani on every front and for each climber we take on to Kilimanjaro we donate funds to this incredibly worthy cause.

In the last 12 months we have been able to provide the home with:

125 school uniforms
Medical care for over 1000 street children
A full months worth of healthy food for the whole Amani family

Along with our regular donations, we take an active role in promoting their fantastic work and more and more climbers are spending time before or after their climb visiting the home. In July we have a pair of climbers who are avid Chelsea football club fans taking time to visit the children and donate to them an array of Chelsea paraphernalia including footballs, pens and notepads and no doubt there’ll be a few games of football before they leave.

We’ll blog once they have returned and share with you all some of their experiences and photos.
