-
Sleep inside Kibo Crater in Crater camp, at 5730m just beneath the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Very few climbers go here but it's an amazing experience if you cope with altitude well.
-
Take an additionalday to acclimatize as you climb Kilimanjaro and improve your chance of trekking Kilimanjaro successfully.
-
Hire a private toilet and avoid Mount Kilimanjaro's smelly "long drop"loos.
-
Book a personal porter to carry your day sack as you climb Kilimanjaro.
-
Upgrade your hotel before or after your Mt Kilimanjaro trek for a little luxury
-
Hire great mattresses and sleeping bags for a warm, comfy night as you climb Mount Kilimanjaro
And after you have summitted Mt Kilimanjaro why not try an exciting private Tanzanian safari or a relaxing Zanzibar beach break.
Our checklist for choosing the best operator or best company to climb Kilimanjaro
In conjunction with the Times Newspaper we developed this checklist to help you plan your Kilimanjaro climb and avoid the problems that still happen far too often
-
Is the operator or Kilimanjaro climb company you are looking to climb Kilimanjaro with a member of ABTA or similar body?
Membership of a recognised travel body, while not a guarantee of quality on a Kilimanjaro climb, is a good indication that the firm you are looking at is reputable and trustworthy. The best Kilimanjaro operators and Kilimanjaro climb companies are not just virtual companies with little more than a website. Also an organisation like ABTA can provide you with help if you have a problem with the Kilimanjaro climb operator themselves
-
Are they financially bonded?
Bonding means that whatever happens you are protected financially for your Kilimanjaro climb. If a Kilimanjaro climb company sells you a trip to climb Kilimanjaro and you live in Europe, wherever they claim to be based, they are breaking the law if they do not offer you this protection. Besides the risk to your money, would you want to put your life in the hands of a company to climb Kilimanjaro that is happy to flout laws designed for your protection?
-
Do they have public liability insurance for your Kilimanjaro climb?
Again this is a legal requirement if you are going to sell a trip to climb Kilimanjaro to anyone living in Europe. Not only does the insurance provide security but the best Kilimanjaro operators will have well prepared operational and risk management plans so it is another good sign of quality. Some Kilimanjaro operators claim it is impossible to get insurance for Kilamanjaro climbs. This is nonsense - they just do not want to pay.
-
Does the operator you want to climb Kilimanjaro with have a valid Tanzanian Tourist Board operating licence?
In order to operate legally and run a Kilimanjaro climb in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro climb companies have to be licensed by the TTB. Some operators avoid this scrutiny by borrowing another firm's licence. This is illegal and a sure sign of bad practice. Do not climb Kilimanjaro with anybody without asking about their licence
-
Does the company selling the Kilimanjaro climb sub-contract to someone else or do they run their own team?
The best Kilimanjaro companies are a lot more than selling operations and far more than a man and a phone who then subcontracts a local Tanzanian company to run the Kilimanjaro climb. There are some good local operators but if you don't know who is actually running your trek to climb Kilimanjaro how can you know if they are any good.
-
Does the Kilimanjaro climb company provide a minimum of two qualified guides on every trip (even for a single person) and a minimum ratio of 1 guide for three climbers?
Two guides for even one person on a Kilimanjaro climb might seem excessive but even guides can get ill or even have an accident. With two or more climbers, maintaining a high guide ratio ensures that the needs of every climber can be looked after while going up Kilimanjaro
-
Can you tailor-make your trek to climb Mt Kilimanjaro trip or do you have to stick to a fixed itinerary?
Fixed itinerary trips can be a cheap way to climb Kilimanjaro but they offer no flexibility and have a much lower success rate. If you want to summit safely Climb Kilimanjaro the way you want to at your own pace
-
Are you being offered a private or group trip to climb Kilimanjaro?
Group treks to climb Kilimanjaro can be cheaper but the real price is that the success rate is lower. If you are spending nearly £2000 isn't it worth that little bit more to give yourself the best chance of making your trek to climb Kilimanjaro a truly memorable experience. If you join a group of 10 the chances of a problem spoiling the attempt on the summit increase rapidly. Do you want to fail because someone else has a problem or do you want to walk at somebody else's pace for 7 days?
-
What is the quality of the equipment they use to help you climb Mt Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro can be a very tough environment and to provide you with a comfortable experience you need high quality tents both for sleeping and dining. A small cramped tent that leaks can totally spoil your Kilimanjaro climb
-
Can they offer flexibility in your scheduled Kilimanjaro climb itinerary if for example your flight is cancelled or your luggage delayed?
Flight delays and lost luggage are an all too familiar part of life in Africa. If you miss your scheduled start time for a trek to climb Kilimanjaro, the best Kilimanjaro climb companies can flex your schedule so that your adventure is not ruined.
-
What happens to your attempt to climb Kilimanjaro if one of your group falls ill and has to descend?
Sadly it is a fact that some people will get sick on Mount Kilimanjaro and will be forced to descend. If this happens to someone in your group is it possible to continue so that at least some can summit. The best Kilimanjaro climb operators will be able to deal with this so you can continue your Kilimanjaro climb
-
Check what is included in the price quoted?
Compare costings carefully - even some of the best Kilimanjaro operators miss out the cost of the Kilimanjaro Park Fees in the prices and add these on as a locally paid cost. And these can be as much as £500 per climber!
-
What customer references can they provide?
Do not just rely on testimonials for your trip to climb Kilimanjaro. It is far too easy to create fictional testimonials. Get some email addresses and check out previous customers who have climbed Kilimanjaro yourselves. Best of all look on facebook or g+
